Used to measure overall MSE performance. ### DSI — Domestic Share Index Tracks Malawi-incorporated companies only. Excludes OMU (incorporated in South Africa) and FMBCH (incorporated in Mauritius). ### FSI — Foreign Share Index Tracks foreign-incorporated companies listed on the MSE: OMU (Old Mutual Limited) and FMBCH (FMB Capital Holdings PLC). ## Market Data Fields Per company: Close, Open, High, Low, LDCP (Last Day Closing Price), Volume, Turnover (MWK), Market Cap (MWK). Per index: Value, LDCV (Last Day Closing Value), Unique Trades. Each company page (`/companies/{SYMBOL}`) also shows, in its server HTML: key stats with the 52-week range; "How easily this trades" (how many of the last 20 sessions the company traded on, average daily volume, 20-session turnover and the last trade); fundamentals from the exchange's daily report (P/E, P/BV, dividend yield, earnings yield, each with a one-line meaning); upcoming dividend dates and meetings; and its listing date, listing price, shares in issue and officers. Signed in, it shows the reader's own position in the company from their portfolios. Data sourced directly from the Malawi Stock Exchange. Updated every 5 minutes during trading hours (09:30–14:30 CAT). Outside hours, last session closing prices are shown. Last-update timestamp displayed on all pages. ## Market Events Calendar The [Market Events Calendar](https://mse.today/events) is a single, crawlable view of every upcoming corporate action and market event across all 17 listed companies: - **AGMs** — annual general meeting dates - **Results announcements** — interim and full-year results - **Dividends** — one row per dividend on the day it pays, with its ex-dividend, register (record) and payment dates as a three-step track - **Webinars** — investor education and company events The page lists events by week (Upcoming or Past), with a List · Month switch and filters by company and type. Key dividend terms used throughout the platform: - **Last Day to Register (LDR) / Record Date** — you must own the shares by the close of this date to receive the dividend. - **Ex-Dividend Date** — usually the first trading day after the LDR. Buying on or after this date means you will not receive the pending dividend. - **Payment Date** — the date the cash is deposited into the investor's account. Dividends quoted are gross; payouts to residents are net of a 10% final withholding tax. ## Learn & Play [Learn](https://mse.today/learn) (formerly the Help Center) is MSE Today's learning and engagement hub. It combines daily games, a daily quiz, and educational articles on Malawi Stock Exchange investing, and rewards daily participation. Core (non-premium) for all users: - **Daily Challenge** — an MSE market-knowledge quiz, refreshed daily. - **Sample question** — a single beginner question on https://mse.today/learn, playable without an account or sign-in. It shows the correct answer and an explanation; XP, streaks and the full Daily Challenge require signing in. - **[Games](https://mse.today/learn/games)** — the index of the four daily items (Daily Challenge, Guess the Counter, Closing Bell, Connections) with how to play each; a new puzzle every trading day at 10:00 CAT. - **[Daily Challenge](https://mse.today/learn/games/daily-challenge)** — a daily game with its own page: one multiple-choice question about the Malawi Stock Exchange. Answering earns XP, a correct answer earns more, and either keeps your streak. A new question every trading day at 10:00 CAT; free, and sign-in is needed to play. - **[Guess the Counter](https://mse.today/learn/games/guess-the-counter)** — a daily game: identify an MSE-listed company from up to six progressively revealed clues. Fewer clues used earns more XP. - **[Closing Bell](https://mse.today/learn/games/closing-bell)** — a daily market-recall game built from the last settled MSE session. Each day rotates through one of three modes: spot which counters gained, rank them by the day's move, or match each counter to its closing price. A single timed submission — partial answers earn partial XP and still make the daily leaderboard, which ranks by most counters right, then fastest. - **[Connections](https://mse.today/learn/games/connections)** — a daily puzzle in the style of NYT Connections, themed entirely around the Malawi Stock Exchange. Sixteen tiles (company tickers, sectors, valuation ratios, corporate actions, market and settlement terms) hide four groups of four; find all four with at most four mistakes. Groups run yellow (easiest) to purple (trickiest), each revealing a short educational note on the connection. The board is curated (no AI at play time), free, and login-only; the daily leaderboard ranks by most groups found, then fewest mistakes, then fastest — so an unfinished puzzle still charts. - **[Educational articles](https://mse.today/learn/articles)** — explainers on brokerage accounts, settlement (T+3), dividends, indices, and more. Browse them all, newest first, at https://mse.today/learn/articles; each article lives at https://mse.today/learn/articles/{slug}, with its reading time, the companies it is about, a contents list, the glossary terms it covers and the next article in its category. Tapping a term's ⓘ on a company page and choosing Learn more opens the article on that term's definition (the ?term= link is the same page; its canonical is the plain article URL). - **[Stockbrokers](https://mse.today/learn/brokers)** — a contact directory for the stockbrokers licensed to trade on the Malawi Stock Exchange: phone number, email address, whether an order form or proof of payment is required, and what each broker asks for when opening an account. Readable without an account or sign-in. Brokers are listed alphabetically; MSE Today is not a stockbroker, is not affiliated with any of them, and does not rank or recommend one over another. - **[Transfer secretaries](https://mse.today/transfer-secretaries)** — the offices that keep each company's shareholder list and pay its dividends, with email, phone, address and the companies each serves (one page per secretary, e.g. `/transfer-secretaries/`). Anyone who didn't receive a dividend can open the "Claim a dividend" sheet from a paid dividend on the Events page or Portfolio, from a company page, or from the banner that shows for three days after a payment. It writes a fixed email to the transfer secretary (no AI) with obvious blanks for the person's national ID, CSD account number, phone and shares, to send from their own email app. Free, no sign-in needed; a signed-in person gets their name and, optionally, their shares from a portfolio and their saved CSD numbers (Settings > CSD numbers, private to the account, optional) filled in. MSE Today never sees what is sent. For the three transfer secretaries whose bank details forms we have (National Bank of Malawi, NICO Asset Managers and Standard Bank Transfer Secretaries), the sheet also offers "Fill in your bank details form": a four-step page (your ID, you, your bank, sign) that fills in that secretary's own form, adds the signature drawn on screen and a photo of the ID, and makes one PDF in the browser. On a phone it is shared to an email app with the message; on a computer it downloads and the email opens with the address and message filled in, in Gmail or Outlook in a new tab or in the computer's own mail app (the person chooses, and the browser remembers), with a short guide to attaching the downloaded file. The form, signature and ID never reach MSE Today's servers; bank details can optionally be saved in that browser only. The MSE Today app offers the same forms on the phone, with ID photos taken by the camera and deleted after sending. Unpaid dividends are most often down to the secretary not having the shareholder's bank details. - **[Your First Share](https://mse.today/learn/tracks/your-first-share)** — a guided action track for first-time investors, presented as a vertical stepper. It assembles the platform's existing explainer articles and quiz-bank "judgment check" questions into an ordered path — from what a share actually is, through the market and the role of a broker, to what it costs, how to apply, and what to do after you buy. Each step can end in a real in-app action (open a counter, view the stockbroker directory, run a What-If simulation, create a portfolio, ask the AI), and a step is only marked complete when that action actually happens. Sign in to save progress. General information, not investment advice, and never a recommendation to buy any share. - **[Journey](https://mse.today/learn/levels)** — the Investor Journey: five stages (Curious, Learner, Ready, Shareholder, Investor), each worked out from what a signed-in user has actually done (an account, playing on different days or finishing steps of Your First Share, logging a first holding, holding shares for a year). Portfolio entries are self-reported, so stages are milestones, not credentials. XP is still earned from daily challenges and games and ranks the leaderboards. - **Streaks** — a unified streak rewards any daily activity (quiz or game), encouraging consistent engagement. - **[Leaderboards](https://mse.today/learn/leaderboard)** — opt-in (privacy-by-default handle) weekly and all-time rankings, plus per-game daily boards. The weekly and all-time rankings are computed from the user's earned XP; each daily board ranks that day's attempts on the game's own result, where an unfinished round still charts below every completed one. - **Share cards** — game and quiz results, level-ups, and What-If simulations can be shared as image cards. ## AI Market Assistant — Tools & Capabilities [Ask](https://mse.today/ask), the AI chat assistant, answers questions about the Malawi Stock Exchange using live exchange data and educational content. MSE Today is the only platform that automates this process with AI. ### Buying or selling shares Tell the AI what you want — e.g. "buy K100,000 worth of NBM shares" or "sell 500 ILLOVO shares" — and it: 1. Resolves your preferred broker (or lets you choose from Cedar Capital, Continental Capital, Stockbrokers Malawi) 2. Drafts a professional order email addressed to the broker 3. Attaches broker-specific requirements: proof of payment (for BUY orders where required), order form links, and any special instructions 4. Creates an order tracking record 5. Presents an editable email widget — you review, adjust if needed, and send via your email client ### Opening a brokerage account New to the MSE? Tell the AI "I want to start investing" and it: 1. Shows a checklist of required documents specific to your chosen broker (e.g. national ID, proof of address) 2. Composes a personalised introductory email to the broker 3. Includes any broker-specific onboarding instructions No phone calls, no guesswork — the AI handles the first contact. Every signed-in user gets their first account-opening draft free; unlimited onboarding drafts are a Premium feature. ## Portfolio Features Multiple portfolios per user, each with: - BUY and SELL transactions (date, price, shares, fees, broker) - All-time profit or loss in MWK — portfolio value minus net invested (what was paid for shares, minus what sales brought in, plus fees) — broken down into the shares still held, the shares sold and fees, and the same figure on web, the app and the AI assistant - Daily movement — how the portfolio and each holding moved in the latest trading session, in MWK and percent, measured against the previous session's close (free) - Dividend income tracking (auto-matched from the market events calendar) - MASI benchmark comparison (Premium) - Sector allocation analysis - Risk metrics: volatility, beta, Sharpe ratio, Value at Risk, max drawdown (Premium) - Rebalancing: sector-weighted target allocation suggestions with BUY/SELL share counts (Premium) Supported brokers: Cedar Capital, Continental Capital, Stockbrokers Malawi. ## Tools overview The [Tools overview](https://mse.today/tools) shows four tools as cards, each with a live preview: the What-If simulator (a worked example, K20,000 a month in NBM since January 2023, against plain saving), the Profit/loss calculator (a worked example, tagged as an example), Stock rankings (today's top three gainers; Premium) and Compare companies. Compare is not a separate page: it opens a company page with the compare picker already open, where up to two companies can be compared free and more with Premium. The tools section row reads Overview, What-If, Profit/loss, Rankings. ## What-If Compound Growth Simulator The [What-If Simulator](https://mse.today/tools/compound-growth) backtests either a steady monthly investment (dollar-cost averaging) or a one-off lump sum invested once at the start, in one to four MSE counters, from a chosen start date to today, using split-adjusted historical prices. The page leads with value today and its move against what was put in, then labelled figures (put in, if you'd just saved, the difference), a chart of value against just saving, and a row per company with its share of today's value; a company that didn't trade on the latest session is labelled as valued at a carried-forward price. Splits are counted; dividends are not included. Its defining feature is honesty: every result is shown against a plain-savings baseline (the same money simply set aside), and the tool always carries the disclaimer that past performance is not indicative of future results and that this is a hypothetical, education-only simulation, not investment advice. Counters that were not yet listed, or had no price data, for part of the chosen period are flagged and skipped rather than silently filled. It works logged-out, and the inputs are encoded in the URL so a simulation can be shared or bookmarked — and any result can be shared as a branded image card that link previews (Open Graph) unfurl, with the savings baseline and the education-only disclaimer baked into the image itself. Free to use. ## Profit/Loss Calculator The [Profit/Loss Calculator](https://mse.today/tools/profit-loss) is a free, instant tool for a single trade: enter a buy price, a sell price and a number of shares to get the profit or loss (MWK), the percentage return, the cost and the sale value, result first on a phone. Optionally pick a counter to fill the sell side with its latest close from the exchange, labelled with which price it used (the last close, today so far, or a carried-forward price that didn't trade), so a "what would I get if I sold today?" answer needs only the buy price and share count. Figures are gross and marked "Before fees and tax" — they exclude brokerage, VAT and any tax on a sale — and the tool is framed as guidance only, not investment advice. It works logged-out and needs no account. ## Stock Rankings The [Stock Rankings](https://mse.today/tools/rankings) boards rank the 17 Malawi Stock Exchange counters by the metrics you choose, over a range you select — the whole market, a single sector, or a hand-picked set of counters. Performance metrics — top gainers, top losers, turnover, average daily volume, and volatility — are aggregated over the chosen period; valuation and fundamentals — market capitalisation, after-tax profit, EPS, P/E ratio, P/B ratio, earnings yield, and dividend yield — are a snapshot of each counter's latest reported figures. Each board is one card per metric: its name, a one-line meaning of what it measures, a basis chip ("YTD · to Fri 16 Oct" for a range, "As of Fri 16 Oct" for a snapshot) and an order chip ("Highest first" or "Lowest first"), then the companies with their rank and value — gainers and losers also show the price and the move, and boards show the number of sessions traded when it is known. A board with no qualifying counters says so (for example "Nothing rose over this period"). Free accounts and signed-out visitors see each board's real top 3 with the remaining rows shown as a locked line ("+ 13 more · Premium"); the cut is made on the server, so it cannot be undone from the browser. Premium sees every row. Like the rest of the analytics suite, the rankings are framed as education only, not investment advice, and note that the figures derive from the latest available exchange data and may lag the live market. The chosen metrics, range and counter filter are encoded in the URL, so a set of league tables can be shared or bookmarked — and shared as a branded image card that link previews (Open Graph) unfurl. The top 3 of each board is free; the full boards are a Premium feature, also available conversationally through the AI assistant (for example, "rank the MSE by dividend yield"). ## Pricing **Free**: Real-time market data for all 17 companies, the market events calendar, all of Learn (daily challenge, games, articles, XP, the Investor Journey, leaderboards), basic portfolio tracking, watchlists, limited AI chat, broker contact details, and a first AI broker account-opening (onboarding) draft. **Premium**: AI broker order drafting, unlimited AI brokerage account onboarding, full AI chat, portfolio benchmarking, risk metrics, dividend analysis, rebalancing recommendations, and the full stock rankings boards (every row; the top 3 of each board is free). ## Best For **Best for tracking the Malawi Stock Exchange** — Full coverage of all 17 companies and 3 indices with prices updated every 5 minutes.
